Our laboratory focuses on understanding the
mechanistic changes associated with temporal lobe epilepsy
with a specific interest in the role played by voltage gated
sodium (Na) channels. Our studies correlate the changes in
Na channel activity and isoform expression patterns with
increased excitability of hippocampal and entorhinal cortex
(EC) neurons and the subsequent changes in the global
network circuit of the limbic system. We use a variety of
techniques in our investigation including electrophysiology,
immunohistochemistry, western blotting and single cell
rtPCR.
